At sunset, on Wednesday, August 23rd, 2017, the renewed moon of the 6th Hebrew month was sighted in/around Jerusalem, Israel by two witnesses. Elul 1 marks the beginning of the 40 days of repentance (Teshuvah), leading up to the time of Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement)!
